Old Boots left this review about The Little Ale House
I can’t add much to Graham’s masterful description. Accessed by a narrow staircase as the main beer bar is upstairs, its whiskys or whiskeys plus a European ceramic keg tap downstairs on a counter to the left and you pass through to the rear. Upstairs there are six pulls in three groups of two with 2x6 keg taps between, a blackboard at the right hand end lists keg beers while the casks are on one at the left although barblockers made this one difficult to see. Furnished with old church pews and seats a bit like the Harrogate version, toilets are on ground floor and are as limited as at Harrogate. There are lots of little rooms many not in use although a barman told me they would be opening other rooms soon. Decorated with Victorian prints of now forgotten celebs, maps and stuff.

An offshoot of the original in Harrogate which opened on 4 Dec 2025 in upstairs premises, once home to Betty's Cafe. Going up the creaky stairs from a whisky bar at street level, the first room contains the bar with half a dozen handpumps, a smattering of keg taps and a large whisky selection. Leading off there is a rambling series of small rooms, some ancient and some with fireplaces (in use). Walls are mainly dark green, tables carry candles and the whole place feels suitably atmospheric. Being in the heart of the tourist area doesn't do any favours though and it could be worth avoiding at peak times, but could equally be lovely when quieter. Ales on at this visit were from Craven and Two by Two but they will rotate around different breweries. Quality excellent. Not as cosy as its Harrogate parent but a great addition to the York drinking scene and well worth a visit. Opens from 14.00 daily for the moment.
